Where Does the Next Generation of Maritime Archaeologists Go to Learn and Train?

The St. Augustine Lighthouse, of course!

From June 29 to July 31 of this year, students participating in the Lighthouse Archaeological Maritime Program (LAMP) Field School gained hands-on experience working alongside our maritime archaeologists as they investigated what is believed to be the shipwreck remains of the City of Sanford.

Built in 1880, the City of Sanford was a sternwheel steamboat that met its fate in 1882, when a fire broke out aboard the vessel. The crew intentionally ran aground to prevent it from sinking, leaving behind archaeological remains that provide an opportunity for students to learn more about Florida’s maritime history.

Over the course of five weeks, students learned what it takes to investigate history while developing the skills needed to conduct archaeological research safety and scientifically. They practiced archaeological techniques such as “hand-fanning.” carefully moving sediment by hand to expose and document archaeological remains. Students also learned how to record the location of timber remains with an advanced GPS system integrated with Geographic Information System (GIS) technology to precisely map the archaeological site.

Student also attended academic lectures and extensive underwater diving training. This included Divers Alert Networks (DAN) training in first aid, CPR, AED and oxygen administration, a blackout/no-visibility diving course, an instruction in data collection and more. These experiences helped to prepare the students to meet the requirements for their American Academy of Underwater Sciences (AAUS) scientific diving certification.

The 2026 Field School may be over, but for these students, the story is just beginning. They leave with new skills, hands-on experience and a deeper understanding of how archaeology in conducted. Interested in joining the next generation of maritime archaeologists? If you or someone you know is interested in attending next year’s Field School, keep an eye on the Lighthouse website this coming spring for information on when to submit an application.
