The 2009 Northeast Florida Symposium on Maritime Archaeology will be held at the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Museum in America’s oldest port, St. Augustine, Florida, from March 25 to March 27, 2009.
The Symposium is sponsored by the Lighthouse Archaeological Maritime Program (LAMP), the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Museum, the Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Estuarine Research Reserve (GTM-NERR), the Florida Public Archaeology Network, and the St. Augustine Archaeological Association. It consists of three days of presentations by a wide range of invited speakers covering a host of topics related to maritime archaeology and the history of seafaring in Florida and beyond.
Registration for all lectures, workshops, and presentations is FREE and open to the public. Fees are charged for lunches, the Thursday night dinner reception at the Lighthouse, and the Friday afternoon river cruise/sonar demonstration (see the downloadable registration form; full registration fees for all events & meals is $90 or $73 for students with current student ID). The Symposium traditionally attracts a diverse range of scholars, students, and interested members of the public, and provides a relaxed setting where these groups can all interact. Participants may attend all of the presentations, or may choose to come and go as they please throughout the three days (Wednesday – Friday) of slideshow sessions and other activities.
This year there will be a special theme focusing on the design, reconstruction, and maintenance of historic boat and ship replicas, in light of an increasing number of wooden boat and ship building projects in St. Augustine, including the plan by the 450 Corps to build a replica 16th century caravel in time for the city’s 450th anniversary in 2015.

A block of rooms will be reserved through March 10th for Symposium speakers and attendees at the Sleep Inn for a special Symposium rate of $59.95 per night. This hotel is located on Anastasia Island just down the road from the St. Augustine Lighthouse, and is well-situated between the beaches and the historic downtown area. Participants who call should ask for the rate under the name “Maritime Symposium.”
