Using the past to teach the future

At the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum, our mission is to "discover, preserve, present and keep alive the history of our Nation's Oldest PortSM as symbolized by our working St. Augustine Lighthouse."

Your donations help us fulfill this mission by funding historic preservation, maritime research and educational programs created to benefit both St. Augustine residents and visitors.

Historic Preservation: Saving Our Stories

This is what our 1876 Keepers' House looked like after a suspicious fire destroyed the historic property in 1970.

If not for a massive community restoration effort, led by the Junior Service League of St. Augustine, this important piece of St. Augustine's past and all the stories it holds would have disappeared forever.

Today, our museum continues to build on the legacy established by the JSL by working to preserve all the historic structures on our Light Station property including the Keepers'  House, 1874 Lighthouse Tower, and WWII-era U.S. Coast Guard Barracks and Jeep Garage.

Your donation will help us protect these irreplaceable pieces of our shared history for future generations.

Maritime Research: Discovering Our Past

Since 1999, the Lighthouse Archaeological Maritime Program has been searching the seas just off the St. Augustine coast for historic shipwrecks.

Each of these maritime tragedies tells the story of our Nation's Oldest PortSM from how our ancestors first arrived in the New World to how they survived despite the hardships of establishing a new colony.

Our maritime research program also provides one of the few places in the world where college students can receive hands-on professional training in underwater archaeology.

We also have an on-site conservation lab where our archaeologists clean and preserve each shipwreck artifact recovered for future exhibition and preservation.

Educational Programs: Inspiring our Future

To keep alive the stories of our Nation's Oldest PortSM we share the maritime culture and heritage of Northeast Florida with more than 43,000 school-age children each year.

Our spring, summer and winter camp programs provide engaging, hands-on activities like traditional Menorcan cast-net making, ship model building, and artifact cleaning for students in grades K-8.

More than half of the students who participate in our camp programs are at-risk students who receive scholarships. For some, it's the first time they have ever seen the ocean, even though they grew up just a few miles away from the lighthouse.

Not only is camp a once-in-a-lifetime experience, for many of these students it also bridges a critical learning gap between the spring and fall semesters.
