Good morning folks,
News from around the yard…
Our own volunteer Ralph Koebke has submitted an application for liberty and will be taking it for a while. He suffered a heart attack on October 9th, spent some time in Flagler Hospital and is back on his feet but needs to take it good and easy for a while. All of our thoughts are with you Ralph for a speedy and hearty recovery, all the best and see you soon!
The Chaisson is coming along nicely, if you haven’t been by in a while do so and check her out.
We sold our 1000th boat drawing ticket in the store last week. More tickets are available and we are still vigorously selling them, good news though on our success!!
If you want to see an original St. Augustine wooden boat, drive over to St. Augustine Marine Center on Riberia St. and see the APPLE JACK out of water. She’s a 74’ shrimp trawler built in 1981 and is one of the last wooden trawlers built here in St. Augustine, the last of a legacy. Not sure what the next move for her but all options are on the table right now and she’ll probably never fish again. Make sure not to miss it, these boats DEFINE our local wooden boatbuilding tradition more than anything else and helped our town get through some tough times. Too bad it’s gone.
IMPULSE sailed in the last of the Fall Series for the SAYC. We shook out, bent on, struck, and doused more canvas than normally handled during a blustery Fastnet race but alas, did not finish in first. Nontheless, we will find out next week where the good ship IMPULSE stands in the final composite tally, wish us luck! Crew on the final race was: M. Keiser (Capt.), B. McNamera (Main), B. Burke (Jib/Gyb), S. Cox (Tailer), J. Bunke (Purser). Our next race is the Commodore’s Cup, on November 13th and will be held offshore, finally a chance to let the spray fly and feel the heave of the billows ‘neath the keel. Maury, I hope you have room on your halyard for the SALH pennant for the Cup race!
The lyrics shared here, below, are from a favorite musician of mine, Bland Simpson. He’s a Carolina boy done good and has a band named the Red Clay Ramblers. Nice song.
QUEEN OF SKYE
(Jack Herrick)
It’s haul her up, boys, and away she sails
Off to seek a fortune
With the sky in her bow and the wind in her sail
Bound for Carolina
Hush little baby don’t you cry
Gone, gone away
We’ll sail through the air on the Queen of Skye
Bound for Carolina
When the Queen of Skye stood in Glasgow town
Off to seek a fortune
Those ragged boys they fit her down
Gone, gone away
Kegs of dried-up salty beef
And biscuits shaped like boulders
An old one-legged parakeet
They carried on their shoulders
Hush little baby don’t you cry
Gone, gone away
We’ll sail through the air on the Queen of Skye
Bound for Carolina
For twenty-one days we sailed the main
Off to seek a fortune
Till we got swept up by a hurricane
Bound for Carolina
We rode those billows low and high
The passengers were wailin’
Then a great strong gust threw us up in the sky
Above the storm clouds sailin’
Hush little baby don’t you cry
Gone, gone away
We’ll sail through the air on the Queen of Skye
Bound for Carolina
Then the captain cried, ‘Clap on more sail’
Off to seek a fortune
When we got caught up in a comet’s tail
Bound for Carolina
We rode that comet round the moon
The passengers delighted
Then the first mate bellowed: ‘There she be’
And America was sighted
Hush little baby don’t you cry
Gone, gone away
We’ll sail through the air on the Queen of Skye
Hush little baby don’t you cry
Gone, gone away
We’ll sail through the air on the Queen of Skye
Bound for Carolina

Have a great weekend and see you all next week!
