VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: Larry Wittmer

Museum volunteer Larry Wittmer volunteers at the base and the tower of the St. Augustine Lighthouse, greeting visitors and answering guest questions.

Q: How many years have you volunteered at the Museum?

A: One + years.

Q: What compels you to volunteer?

A: I really believe in “OUR LIGHTHOUSE” and its mission. It is very special to live in such an historic American city as St Augustine. I want to be a part of preserving this valuable artifact in the Oldest City in the USA and sharing its story with our visitors from around the world.

Q: What’s your favorite part of volunteering here?

A: Meeting our guests from all over the world and sharing the unique story of the St Augustine Lighthouse and the role it has played in world and American history. Working with the lightHouse staff and volunteers is educational, and it’s fun being a member of this unique “family”.

Q: What initially interested you in volunteering?

A: I have always had an interest in American history. The history of American lighthouses is a unique “slice” of that history, but nevertheless, an important piece in the overall American history “story”. I enjoy sharing this story with our St Augustine Lighthouse guests.

Q: How long have you lived in St. Augustine?
A: Five and 1/2 years. We have lived nearby for 15+ years and we frequently visited our children /grandchildren who live in St Augustine. My career required us to live and travel throughout the world. We were always attracted to St Augustine – its people and its history.
