The Traveling Sea Chest to Bring Maritime Education to Local Schools

The Traveling Sea Chest to Bring Maritime Education to Local Schools ST. AUGUSTINE, FL - The St. Augustine Lighthouse & Museum has developed a tool to help spark the interest of under-served and at-risk students using maritime sciences.

The Traveling Sea Chest is a collection of learning materials that takes shape in the form of a game, entitled Shipwreck Passage, and other hands-on activities.

During A Sailor’s Life students will learn navigation skills, how to tie knots, and marine customs and traditions. In Ships and Sailing children learn about the simple machines sailors use while at sea, and the Chest also challenges its pupils to become archaeologists, preserve history, and collect and conserve artifacts.

“We’re bringing maritime education to students who do not have the opportunity to come to us,” said the museum’s Director of Education Chris Kastle. “It’s interactive and interesting, and we hope that broadening their horizons will generate their curiosity.”

Before the Sea Chest is offered to area schools it will undergo a second testing phase. First tested on site by visiting children and parents the final test will be conducted at R.B. Hunt Elementary. The pilot program will determine what tweaks are needed to optimize its benefits in a classroom setting.

The Traveling Sea Chest will be available to local elementary schools, and only require a deposit to cover the replacement costs of any broken items. To inquire about reserving the Sea Chest for your class call Chris at (904) 829-0745 ext. 208.
