Air Potato Roundup
Wed, Jan 06 2010 The public is invited to the to come to the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Museuma nd enjoy a fun way to learn about the threat of invasive plants and be a part of the solution.
The First Coast Air Potato Round-up is a great activity for families and participants of all ages. There are 12 work sites throughout Nassau, Duval, and St. Johns County. Volunteers will spend the morning collecting Air Potato bulbils and there will be prizes awarded to the largest potatoes found.
Air Potato (Dioscorea bulbifera) is an invasive plant species in the United States and has been listed in Florida by the Florida Exotic Pest Plant Council as one of Florida’s most invasive plant species since 1993. In addition, in 1999 the plant was added to the Florida Noxious Weed List (5b-57.007 FAC) which means it may not be introduced, possessed, moved, or released in the state without a permit. The vine is fast growing and can engulf native vegetation very rapidly, especially where native plant communities are affected by fragmentation. The plant produces a large number of bulbils which facilitate its rapid spread and make it extremely difficult to control as new plants can sprout from even very small bulbils.
This event is hosted annually by the Nature Conservancy and the First Coast Invasive Working Group (FCIWG). The FCIWG takes a multi dimensional approach to combating invasive species in NE Florida. Open to public and private land managers, resource managers, and local community members, the Working Group creates a network of resources and information. The Working Group uses many tools such as education and outreach including training sessions and educational events such, workdays for removal and restoration, and sharing mapping and monitoring information.
